Benefits of Polycarbonate vs Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (“ABS”)

The hard shell of our Ravenshell backpack is made from Polycarbonate not ABS (which looks similar but does not perform in the same way). In general:
  • Durability: Polycarbonate is much more impact-resistant than ABS. It can handle more rough handling without cracking, making it ideal for frequent travelers or those worried about protecting their gear.
  • Flexibility: Polycarbonate is more flexible than ABS, allowing it to absorb impact better and return to its original shape. This flexibility helps reduce damage during travel.
  • Lightweight: Polycarbonate backpacks are typically lighter than those made of ABS. Given hand luggage is typically 7 kg, it is hard to get the trade off between strong and durable vs light and flimsy. In our view, Polycarbonate offers the best outcome.
  • Scratch Resistance: Polycarbonate has a more scratch-resistant surface than ABS, helping it maintain a newer look for longer. It often also comes in a glossy finish that resists visible wear although, over time, scratches cannot be avoided.
  • Temperature Resistance: Polycarbonate handles temperature variations better than ABS, meaning it’s less likely to become brittle in colder climates.
  • Longevity: Thanks to the strength, flexibility, and scratch resistance of polycarbonate, backpacks made with this material generally last longer than ABS options.
In summary: While backpacks with a polycarbonate shell tend to be more expensive than those made with ABS, they offer superior durability, flexibility, and a lightweight design, making them a better long-term investment for frequent travelers.
